Turning curious microbes
into beautiful science.
VijayKumar Patra, PhD, HDR · R&D Project Leader
I'm a skin and scalp microbiome scientist. I lead research on the skin microbiome and turn what we learn into active ingredients for products, from the first hypothesis to a finished candidate.
The science, made visual.
The invisible ecosystem that shapes and defends your skin.
ExploreHow UV shapes and damages skin, layer by layer.
ExploreHow UV light reshapes the skin's immune system.
ExploreA skin whisperer
for microbes.
From my PhD through my postdocs to a senior scientist role at L'Oréal, I've chased one question: "why does the skin and scalp microbiome do that?" Now I try to flip the script and use the answers to build microbiome-powered actives.
Today, as a skin microbiome expert, I lead microbiome research projects in L'Oréal's Advanced Research division. I take ideas from a first hypothesis all the way to an active ingredient that can go into a product. I run 2+ projects end to end, each with its own cross-functional team of 5–10 scientists in microbiology, bioinformatics, immunology and formulation.
Before L'Oréal, I was a self-confessed international lab hopper: Graz, Karolinska (Stockholm), CIRI (Lyon) and Nottingham. I worked on the skin microbiome, UV radiation and immunity, and in 2026 I obtained my HDR (habilitation).

Where biology meets beauty.
Skin & Scalp Microbiome
I turn microbiome biology into data that supports product claims, and into microbiome-powered actives.
16S & Microbiome Sequencing
I analyze microbiome data from phylum to genus level, from healthy-skin swabs to studies that explain mechanisms.
Bioinformatics
I turn raw sequencing and cytometry data into go or no-go decisions at every stage of a project.
Immunology & AMPs
I study skin immunity and antimicrobial peptides, and I characterize them with flow cytometry.
Photobiology
I study how UV radiation changes the microbial load on the skin and the immune response, in models and in humans.
R&D Project Leadership
I lead cross-functional teams of 5–10 scientists from the first concept to an active and then to a product.
